What is this Cable for?

Whilst tidying through a bunch of cables, we noticed the sheer amount of cables and connectors that we have lying around in the office.

Most of these are used in almost every customer’s site depending on their requirements. These cables also seem to tangle, mix up and cause safety hazards too if they are not handled or placed away carefully. To help you to identify cables more clearly, Comms-Byte have compiled a list of cables which are most commonly found in offices.

The Ethernet Cable

Purpose: These are network cables and are used to connect devices to a router or a switch to enable the local network. This will allow internet access and file sharing.

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cable

Purpose: These connect computers to other peripheral devices such as scanners, cameras, phones and printers.

The High-definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Cable

Purpose: These carry a display and sound signal from equipment, such as a Blu-ray player to a television.

The Video Graphics Array (VGA) Cable

Purpose: These are used most commonly to connect computers to monitors. This works by transmitting video signals from a computer to a monitor.

The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) Cable

Purpose: This cable is used to connect a video source to a display source, such as a monitor. You will find these on LCD monitors and desktops.

The Fibre Optic Cable

Purpose: These are made from bundles of thin plastic or glass threads (fibres) that carry and transfer data through light waves. Mostly used to provide high-speed connections or telecommunications.

The DisplayPort Cable

Purpose: This is used for both audio and video connectivity between computers and monitor displays.

These are just a few of the cables that are commonly used in the office. There are many more different types of cables that are used.
